(01) Project Overview
Bread and Butter.
The Rice Deli is a grab-and-go onigiri place that sells Thai-style rice balls. Not only does it provide an intuitive eco-friendly secondary packaging, our brand also come with sustainable onigiri wrapper that takes away the labor of figuring how to open one. Why pay the another price of sweat and effort before enjoying delicious food?

(02) Challenge
Recipe for a Great Design.
The aim is to develop an alternative onigiri packaging that resolves issues such as confusing openings, fragile materials, and excessive waste along with a unique travel-friendly secondary packaging, great for gift-giving. Targeted at local stores and restaurants, our packaging will prioritize inclusivity, sustainability, and hygiene, offering a more convenient packing solution.
The issue with the commonly-used onigiri wrappers, in my opinion, has a confusing opening process. It is fragile and produces a lot of waste due to multiple plastic layers, making it a hassle before getting to enjoy the snack. It can be non-intuitive for the people who have to idea how to open it, which in turns become more time consuming. Now, the difference is that I’m aiming to create an alternative wrapper and secondary packaging that provides fresh onigiris with Thai food. It is for the local stores/restaurants instead of being sold in convenience stores, so that it is sold without the need for preservatives.

A pinch of salt goes a long way.
This project was sent as a competition in FUJIFILM's packaging design contest. Utilizing their specialized color clear coat on key design elements enhances the emphasis on branding, creating a distinct and polished visual impact. The packaging uses minimal material to reduce excessive waste while acting as a a durable and stable shelter for the product.
My aim is to be inclusive, eco-friendly, and hygenic. I want the product to be easy to transport while keeping the freshness of the food in mind. By using as little materials to create a curated sized secondary packaging that allows the food to breathe is important for our health standards. I believe making unconventional approach provides newer ideas to emerge into an every-day usage while also taking part in reducing excessive waste. It is a perfect opportunity to introduce urban consumers to a simpler way to bringing our beloved Thai cuisine into the fresh and travel-friendly food industry.
